When it comes to searching for an experienced, as well as an empathetic and trusting divorce lawyer, it’s important to look for criteria such as years in business, what others have to say or even look for referrals from friends, families and colleagues. However, there are other things I want to mention that can also be important when it comes to selecting an attorney for your case. Personally, I would also look for those things I just mentioned, but I would take that a step further.
I look for is what I’d like to call, ‘bed side manner.’ Allow me to explain. I imagine for a moment that I became sick or would need surgery. At that point, it’s a pretty scary situation. But having nurses and doctors that care and make me feel comforted, makes the procedure more bearable and not as scary. Wouldn’t you want the same with your attorney? You’re going through a pretty rough time in your life, so you need an attorney and a team that will give you that sense of security and comfort.
So on a search, I would ask myself these questions: Whether in person or over the phone, how does the person make me feel? Safe and secure? In person, do they give me eye contact, smile and their attention? On the phone, is their voice friendly and warm? You may or may not notice these things because your mind is elsewhere and that is understandable. But over the years, I’ve become an observer of people, and this technique is priceless.
Because you never want to base a decision on emotion alone, we need some logic to go along with that. When you speak to them, do they sound confident and reassuring? Keep in mind, however, that during your consultation the attorney may not have all the answers right away. They are looking for the main points of your case to make sure they can assist you.
Also, please don’t feel intimidated on your attorney search. Attorneys do have to maintain a certain level of objectivity in order to be unbiased and make the best decisions for you on your case. A case has to be based on logic, laws and procedure, not emotion. Just think of it as ‘tough love.’ They need you to get in those financials and cooperate with them to come up with the best solutions for your property settlement or parenting plan. But they also care about you and your well-being, making sure you’re confident with the direction your case is going and that you receive a fair resolution.
